I do love visiting and writing about gourmet restaurants, you know the ones; they almost create a piece of art with the food presented on the plate in front of you. You can’t help but be impressed but sometimes that patriotic craving for something a little more simple (but by no means any less tasty) is really all you want.

Fish and chips: A quintessential piece of the puzzle that makes this country great and lucky old Cheltenham has the best in the country.

Simpsons Fish and Chips, just on the outskirts of the town centre has been in the running for first place for a while now but has just recently managed to top the charts and has been officially voted the the best chippy in Britain.

With this accolade, and the fact that they’ve had a revamp in the restaurant, there couldn’t be a better excuse to celebrate.

The walls have a seaside theme, with cosy booths lined up against them and the bar feels quite rustic with wooden boxes being used as shelves and large exposed light features.

Foodie goodies soon started to appear out of the kitchen; first up were fishcakes.

Next up were what we were all there for; the best fish and chips! Sticking true to the seaside theme, they were handed out in little paper cones – which certainly kept the chefs busy in the kitchen.

We were even treated to some entertainment, whilst we picked away at the award winning chips.

Not wanting to let their regulars down, they kept the takeaway open and tried to keep up with the demand.
