Roadtripping in Croatia: Dubrovnik

Our final stop and the last few days of our holiday were spent in Dubrovnik.

When I was researching where to go in Croatia, most websites said that you couldn’t miss off a trip to Dubrovnik and they were so right!

It took a long 6 hour coach journey from Zadar to get there but we were both glad we made the effort. The coach journey wasn’t all that bad – we passed through a small part of Bosnia so had to have our passports checked and drove all along the coast.

The views were amazing.

We were staying right in the centre of the old city walls, surrounded by restaurants, shops and a stones throw away from the beach.

We opted for apartments instead of Airbnb this time but still received great recommendations, directions and help for when we had to get to the airport.

After a tiring day of travelling we freshened up, then headed straight out for dinner and an explore.

Dubrovnik’s old town has one main street and then lots of side streets that are full of restaurants, shops, museums etc.

The following day we took advantage of the cooler morning and went for a walk around the city.

To do the official walk around the top of the wall costs £10 per person so we decided to be adventurous and create our own walk – going to one of the far sides of the wall, giving us top notch views of the old city.

We rested our feet up for some lunch before heading to the beach and booking ourselves a jetski to explore from the sea.

After a dip in the sea and some soaking up of the sun we went to the other side of the beach and hopped on our jetski. Luckily James had already been on one before so I jumped on the back with him.

Minus the fact I almost got chucked off the back because someone went a little ermm speed-happy it was great fun.

We drove to one of the surrounding islands and around some of the small coves – accidentally discovering a nudist beach! One of the nudists was more than happy to get in the back of one of our selfies.

I had a little go at driving the thing but turns out it’s quite tricky so I handed the reigns back to James. I trusted the fact he wouldn’t try to chuck me off again.

A fun little adventure and a great way to explore different spots.

We went back to the beach for one last swim and then back to the apartment to get ready for dinner.

We opted for somewhere close as we’d booked tickets for the cable car, that takes you up to the fortress and looks down on the town and out to sea.

The views were spectacular. There is even a museum at the top about the civil war that happened only 20 years ago. It’s open until late and we were both keen to know a little more of the country we’d had the pleasure of visiting.

When we reached the bottom we found a wine bar and sipped on the sweetest white wine before heading to bed for another day of adventure.

The morning of our last full day in Croatia we booked ourselves on a Segway tour. Again James had already given them a go, however it was my first time.

With a bit (a lot) of reassurance that I wouldn’t fall off, I slowly relaxed and soon enough got the hang of it.

The tour guide took us across all sorts of terrain, up to a church perched high above the town.

When we returned back to the old town we stopped for lunch in the form of an octupus burger and did some souvenir shopping.

We visited a War Photography museum that depicted the civil war and also had a gallery on the atrocities in Africa. Some pretty hard-hitting images but still very interesting.

Later that evening we had a bite to eat and enjoyed wandering the streets of Dubrovnik one last time.

The 4.30am wake up the next morning was a bit of a struggle after one too many cocktails the night before however it was the perfect time to see the town without hordes of people.

A lovely relaxing getaway in a beautiful country. We will be back.
